Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip (feat Posdnous) – Thou Shalt Always Kill (De La Edit)

March 26, 2010 · Leave a Comment

I picked up on Scroobius Pip a few days back because of the name.  It comes from the Edward Lear nonsense poem.  I love it when I find something that I missed out on in the recent past.  This is from 2008 and I don’t know how I missed it.  This version, the De La Edit features Posdnous from De La Soul.

Been listening to the album Angles a fair bit as a result.  Scroobius has a way with the words.

Mariachi El Bronx – Cell Mates

March 2, 2010 · Leave a Comment

The Bronx are a hardcore punk band from LA.  In that respect, to my ears, they’re fairly predictable – the sort of thing you’d expect to hear turn up on the soundtrack to a Tony Hawk Pro Skater game.

Mariachi El Bronx though, are their mariachi alter ego.  It seems they are their own support act and in this guise they are brilliant.  I love those mariachi horns on these songs about jail, murder and hookers.

This is the opening track from their album El Bronx which is pretty much in the same vein.  I’m enjoying this album a lot.

Oh and don’t refer to them as a mariachi band, that’s like saying band band.

5 Years Time – Noah and The Whale

February 19, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Listening to last night’s Radcliffe and Maconie Radio 2 show I heard this for the first time.  It’s a pleasant uke based tune.

Embedding’s disabled so you’ll have to go off to YouTube for a listen.  Hurry on back after and have a look around.

The eagled eyed may notice a huge gap between this post and the previous one.  I can’t guarantee that I’ll post something every day but I’ll try to be more frequent.

The Angels Sing To Me – The Toy Hearts

December 22, 2008 · 1 Comment

I intended to go see these at the Kitchen Garden Cafe in Kings Heath this evening but by the time we’d got ourselves organized it was sold out. Seems I am unlucky with this band. I tried to see them at a pub in Balsall Heath about a month ago, only to get there and find the pub was shut.
I did see them earlier in the year at Moseley Folk Festival and was mightily impressed. They are a Birmingham based bluegrass band. It’s very much a family thing with dad on banjo and national steel guitar and his two daughters on guitar and mandolin. The girls’ vocals harmonize real purty.

This is one of their slower tracks picked mainly because it name-checks Bill Monroe.

Posting this one from my phone so no links at the moment. A google should point you to their myspace where you can take a listen.

Missed the hype about these early on so only picked up on it in the last few weeks.  Great album though.

Monkey’s World – Monkey: Journey to the West.

December 6, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’m writing this on the train on the way back from the o2 where I went to see Monkey: Journey To The West so I’ll have to add a link later for you to listen to the track.
If you don’t know It’s Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s latest project, a Chinese opera based on the classic 70s TV series, Monkey, which in turn was based on an old 16th century Chinese folk tale.
The whole thing was great. If you get the chance go see it. We went down for the day to catch a matinée performance.
It’s tough to choose a track to be honest with the other standouts being Monkey Bee and Heavenly Peach Banquet. However the opener, Monkey’s World just pips it for me I think.

As promised here’s a link.  This ones the version of Monkey’s World that was performed on Later….with Jools Holland.

Stake Your Claim – Eli “Paperboy” Reed and The True Loves

December 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’m really enjoying Eli “Paperboy” Reed’s 2008 Album, Roll with You, at the moment.  This is the opening track.  It would be easy in light of Mark Ronson’s transformation of Amy Winehouse to suggest this is the result of record companies looking for something with an authentic soul sound.  I don’t know if that is the case here or not.  I really don’t know much about this guy other than how the music sounds and it sounds good.

It starts with insistent drumming that commands attention.  Greal soulful vocals, with the full set of yelps and growls, combine with tight brass, stax-like guitar hooks and those little drum rolls to have you wondering if this really was made back in the 60s.

It’s got that sort of production where it’s just on the edge of distortion, almost as if it’s being played out of an old 60s Dansette record player.   I think I’ll return to that line of thought in a later post though as that leads me into other tracks.
