Julie Fowlis with Jenna Reid & Donal Lunny – Biodh An Deoch Seo ‘N Làimh Mo Rùin

March 6, 2010 · Leave a Comment

I’m a big fan of BBC’s the Transatlantic Sessions.  This one features Julie Fowlis singing in Gaelic and also Donal Lunny (of Planxty and the Bothy Band) on bouzouki.  I attended the BMG (Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar) Rally today and in one of the workshops had a go on a bouzouki.  Good fun.

Matty Groves – Fairport Convention

January 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

A few days back I mentioned this track when I posted about Shady Grove by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman.  Today I’m posting the English version, Matty Groves, which featured on Fairport Conventions 1969 album, Liege and Lief.  I didn’t go to Cropredy Festival in 2007 but a mate of mine did.  As well as the usual extensive Fairport set they also reformed the 1969 line up, apart from the late Sandy Denny, to perform the album in it’s entitity.

I came across the FM audio of the Cropredy 2007 performance on Friday evening which is available (at the time of writing anyway) and well worth a download at Big O.  The quality is much better than the video clip below

I Wish I Could Have Loved You More – Candie Payne

January 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I was listening to Phill and Phil’s Perfect 10 podcast yesterday evening when they were slagging off Duffy a fair bit.   Now I’m not really that bothered about Duffy either way but I did agree with them when they said “if you like Duffy then you should check out Candie Payne”.

This is the song that all those people who’ve bought Rockferry should check out.  It’s from the album of the same name that was pretty much overlooked when it came out in 2007.  It has a great 60s sound to it with a dark edge to it.  It has a hint of the 60s spy TV program to it, something like the Prisoner.   Mark Ronson is supposed to be working on the production of her second album.  Well I don’t suppose Amy Winehouse has got another album in here for a while.

I bought a mate a copy of the album for his birthday in 2007.  It was a gamble present as he’d not heard her before.  He loved it.

I’m afraid the video clip to this one has been restricted by the record company so I can’t embed it but go take a listen and a look over at YouTube.

Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On) – Robert Plant and Alison Krauss

December 26, 2008 · 1 Comment

I’m not planning to do any of that review of the year stuff that other bloggers and other more traditonal publications are doing but one of my highlights of 2008 was when Robert Plant joined Fairport Convention onstage at Cropredy Festival for The Battle of Evermore.

This track originally by the Everly Brothers, comes from his collaboration with Alison Krauss on the Raising Sand album.  T Bone Burnett, a man with a collection of fine guitars, does a fine job on the production with the spacious reverb and slapback echo.

You can hear this track over at YouTube but for copyright reason it can’t be embedded here.
