Matty Groves – Fairport Convention

January 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

A few days back I mentioned this track when I posted about Shady Grove by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman.  Today I’m posting the English version, Matty Groves, which featured on Fairport Conventions 1969 album, Liege and Lief.  I didn’t go to Cropredy Festival in 2007 but a mate of mine did.  As well as the usual extensive Fairport set they also reformed the 1969 line up, apart from the late Sandy Denny, to perform the album in it’s entitity.

I came across the FM audio of the Cropredy 2007 performance on Friday evening which is available (at the time of writing anyway) and well worth a download at Big O.  The quality is much better than the video clip below

I Wanna Be Your Dog – The Stooges

January 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Stooges guitarist, Ron Asheton, was found dead today in his home in Ann Arbor, near Detroit.  He died a few days ago of a heart attack it seems.  Not much more to say really, other than to put forward this track from their debut album as some sort of tribute.  His guitar playing on this pretty much sums up his importance and influence in popular music.  That was him, second from the left.

Sin City – Flying Burrito Brothers

January 5, 2009 · 1 Comment

I first heard this song back in the eighties when Billy Bragg did it accompanied by the (careful with the spelling now) Country and Western Gynecologist, Hank Wangford on mandolin.

This is the  original by the Flying Burrito Brothers, a band comprising various ex-members of the Byrds led by Gram Parsons wearing his trademark Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors suit.

21st Century Schizoid Man – King Crimson

January 3, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Been really enjoying BBC Four’s Prog Britannia series. This cropped up a lot and had me listening to In The Court of The Crimson King this afternoon.
I promise not to do prog tomorrow.
